I Love My Job, Uniquivocally.

Don't hate on me y'all if you aren't as excited about your jobs as I am, but I LOVE my job. I ain't just workin' for the weekend.

Today, for example, was a work day for me. I got to wake up late, meet a friend for coffee, walk Green Lake and then 4 different cool women showed up for appointments with me.

When I went to school to become an Esthetician I did not know if I would enjoy the actual day to day work. For starters, the schooling threw me for a loop. My beauty school tended towards being gossipy and dramatic; the dress code was enforced but the schedule was never followed. I found every fault with it. Interestingly, though, I find myself very thankful for the skill set I learned and learned well at that school. I can sugar with my eyes closed and prescribe a skin care regimen with the best of them.

Alas, I'm a fully trained lady with a license from the state to practice skin care. I have a pink "office" and get to hear everyone's juicy secrets. I don't mean to brag or boast, but I have a pretty perfect setup. My hours are flexible and I have plenty of time to focus on my studies. My last job before this was waiting tables and I'm overjoyed to have traded in my old plate-carrying lifestyle.

Okay, okay... I'm done. But to anyone who hates their job, just don't forget that there is always another option out there. And it might be something you'd never have expected yourself to do. C'est la vie!

Gloria Steinem <-- A lady with great skin at 75!

Now, this is a blog about skin care...mostly! I am posting the link below because Gloria Steinem's spirit and activism is very inspiring to me. She is 75 years old and is politically active and engaged in the global conversation.

Beyond that, she looks amazing and in the interview I linked to below, she discusses her position on plastic surgery with an interesting take. As a younger woman, she said she would consider getting a face lift when she aged and as a 75 year old has opted not to. I appreciate the duality of her position on this and on the importance of defining for yourself what it means to be YOU at whatever age you're at.

Sugar Brazilians Are the New Black

The trend of bikini-area tending has swooped in and it is here to stay, ladies. Whether you like it or not, you are living in a culture where the way you style the hair on your cho-cha is a sending a message to those who see it.

Now, even if you are a regular Sex and the City viewer, odds are you haven't polled your female friends about what they're sporting downstairs. So, take it from someone who knows-- brazilians are abundant. They are no longer relegated to the realm of the "ladies of the night". Au contraire, the sugary sweet mother of 2 in line next to you at Whole Foods gets regular brazilians.

For starters, you have options. No-one is going to drag you kicking and screaming to the treatment room. Also, if you haven't tried it yet, I guarantee that the sugar bikini/brazilian is not the crisis situation you are imagining. So, whether or not you decide to do some routine maintenance, here are a few of the "looks" available to you:

1) The Purist: the untended, let it grow wild style
2) The Swimmer: hair is removed from the upper thighs, outside where a swimsuit covers
3) The Betwixt: this style features an impeccably shaped tuft of hair on top, with the rest au natural
4) The 6-of-1, Half Dozen of Another: leaves hair on top, and takes off the rest through to the back
5) The Clean Slate: the unadorned from front to back look, the most popular brazilian style

Now, the more important piece of business is this: DO NOT SHAVE. DO NOT SHAVE. DO NOT SHAVE. The skin in your bikini-area is very sensitive and repeated shaving leads to razor burn, bumps, ingrown hairs and grow-back stubble. If you are going to tend your garden, spring for a sugaring session. Sugaring is the most gentle form of hair removal and you'll only deal with your maintenance once a month instead of the more routine attention that shaving requires.
